Art and Artists — Harry Charles Tim: British Soldier Turns Artist
Harry Charles Tim is an artist of extraordinary zeal and inventiveness, whose canvases — whether large or small — are packed with stories, ideas and a use of colour and draughtsmanship not seen since the days of Francis Bacon.
Harry was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1956 and educated at Hugh Clopton Secondary Modern School, an establishment which, if nothing else, taught him how to look after himself and survive.
At the age of sixteen he joined the army where he saw active service — with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers — in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, which was an experience that has undoubtedly affected his art.
In 1987, after military service, Harry began to travel the world, eventually settling in Germany where he dealt in antiques and fine art.
It would be too easy and glib to say that Harry has been influenced by many artists, but those influences are not the first things you experience when looking at one of Harry’s paintings. No, what you see is a powerful imagination at work bringing out a whole palette of emotions and creativity that hits you squarely between the eyes. Harry’s work simply cannot be ignored because it says something to us: and the more we look the more it says and the more we need to respond.
