After the war Lawrence and Frieda left Britain to pursue the nomadic lifestyle, which included a lengthy stay in New Mexico in 1922, where, at Mabel Stern’s place in Taos, they met two Danish artists, Merrild, and Gotzsche, which was, as David Garnett describes, full of “…old time cowboys and bad men…”.
