I agree with you about LCL, it is a great novel, and most of Lawrence’s stuff was taking a hard dig at latent Victorian hypocrisy, thank goodness. I have a feeling Lawrence was writing about himself when he talks of unhappiness here and there: he only really settled in Italy, where he wrote LCL. Maugham settled very happily in the South of France after years of travel and spying for the British Secret Service. Both great writers.
