Kay Whittaker English Artist
“I remember one night The Beatles were playing at the Odeon…”
Kay Whittaker is an artist with a passion for life — and a talent to match — with a constant need to travel. She and her partner, actor Steve Devey, travelled to the south of France a couple of years, where they spent a good deal of time roaming Van Gough country in search of a castle. They found several but bad weather intervened and they decided to head back to their cottage in Southport to plan their next adventure, and, for Kay, get on with some work.
I’ve had long chats with Kay. This is her story.
Kay was born in Southport in the 1950s, but her parents, Stanley and Jessie, had moved there from Rochdale soon after the war on the advice of their doctor, who thought the sea air would benefit her brother’s asthma.
“ They settled in well. My father had been in the RAF, and straight after the war he set up a travel agency, organising coach tours here and in Ireland.”
“He had his own jazz band too, and toured all over the UK, playing his beloved tenor sax. The band was pretty successful.
